About the Project

Welcome to the Schipp Name Study home page.

The Schipp Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Schipp name. The hope is that researchers who have the surname Schipp in their family tree will join this Study and help build a valuable resource for people studying direct or related lines.

One specific goal of this Study is to identify the origins of the Schipp family from Eltville, Nassau and the migration of their descendants.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Schipps in Australia, US, Germany etc), by time period (Schipps in the 18th Century), or by topic (Schipp DNA, Schipp Occupations, Schipp Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

You can view a list of all WikiTree profiles that have been added to the Schipp One-Name Study at our SCHIPP Category page.

I am the Name Study Coordinator of this Study and a descendant of the Schipp family who lived in Eltville, Nassau from about 1752 through to the mid 19th Century. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Origins of the Schipp family name

The origins of the Schipp family name are uncertain. Some have suggested it is derived from the North German metonymic occupational name for a shipman or a shipbuilder (Schip meaning ship).[1] This is possible. However, entries in the Eltville Family Book suggest the name was originally (or alternatively) spelt "Schupp" or "Schub".

For this reason, these variants also fall within the scope of this Study. See the related surnames and surname variants.

Participation in the Study

If you have the surname Schipp or the variant spellings Schupp, Schub, or Schubb in your family tree, I hope you will participate in our Study and help build a valuable resource for people studying direct or related lines. You are invited to contribute as you like, when you can.

Ways to get involved

1. Research and create profiles for your own Schipp ancestors and their descendants.
2. Add the Schipp Study's WikiTree Category Code [[Category:Schipp Name Study]] to the profiles of people you manage who were born with the Schipp surname or either of its variant spellings Schupp and Schub.
Just copy and paste [[Category:Schipp Name Study]] immediately above the "== Biography ==" line of the relevant profiles that you manage. This adds the profile automatically to the page that maintains a list of all associated profiles.
3. Add the Schipp One Name Study Sticker to profiles you manage directly underneath the "== Biography ==" line::
This profile is part of the Schipp Name Study.
This sticker is specifically for Schipp profiles and the related variant lineages Schupp and Schub. It can be used in place of the Category code shown above. Including the sticker automatically adds a profile to the Category.
If you don't wish to have the ONS sticker displayed near the top of the biography section of a profile, using only this Category code will include the profile in the Study in an unobtrusive way.
4. If you would like to become a Member of the Study or create a research page for your particular area of interest, please contact the Name Study Coordinator: Susan Stopford for assistance. Members can also show their project affiliation with the ONS Member Sticker:

{{Member|ONS|name=Schipp}}
5. To keep abreast of WikiTree communications dealing with the Study, add the G2G tag Schipp.
